The TSU Career and Professional Development Center hosted the annual Tiger Career Fair, September 26, 2019 in the Student Recreation Center.
Over 100 employers were in attendance, eager to meet and connect with TSU Tigers.
Students filled into the Gymnasium; like Alicia Fontenot many students came dressed for success with their elevator speech and resume in tow.
“I wasn’t expecting anyone to cater to my interest, because they are so specific. However, it was a nice surprise. The first company I spoke with was an exact match to my career aspiration”.
Fontenot is a senior and will graduate in spring with a Chemistry degree. She aspires to use her degree to create a beauty product line for underserved communities. Fontenot was able to network with a representative from McKinley Resources Inc, which specializes in the distribution of skincare and over the counter raw material.
Like Fontenot’s experience many students had positive things to say about the career fair.
Kiera Taylor, a Political science major said, “the career fair opened my eyes to industries that I had not previously considered going into”.
Jasmin Urquiza a Broadcast Journalism major was excited that she was able to make a great connection with ABC during the career fair but had hoped to see some news outlets from the Spanish community such as Telemundo and Univison.
Whether you already know your next move or are still figuring it out, the TSU career fair was the place to be.
Employers were looking for a range of positions to be filled such as; internships, full-time, part-time, and even remote work. In addition, universities such as University of Houston’s Pharmacy program, UH-Victoria, and Alabama A&M were in attendance promoting their post-undergrad options.
There was something there for everyone.
“The 2019 Texas Sothern University Career Fair is only a snapshot of all the employers looking to hire TSU talent”, said Andreaus Boise-Fontenot, the University Career & Professional Development Center Director and women responsible for organizing the event.
Andreaus Boise-Fontenot mentioned how TSU had nine separate career fairs the previous year, explaining how this career fair had an all-majors focus but there will be more career fairs throughout the year that focus on specific departments.
Companies such as Reynolds & Reynolds, Oracle, Microsoft, and Geico all had positives things to say about the prospects at Texas Southern.
Monisha Kothari the representative from Oracle said she looks for; a good handshake, confidence, and a great elevator pitch when she is deciding which candidates she will pursue. Kothari said, “the candidate pool exceeded her expectations”.
Mackenna Spalding from Reynolds and Reynolds said, “many students were well prepared and had researched us beforehand, that genuine interest is really important and lets me know they are prepared for employment.”
This was neither Mackenna nor Monisha’s first time recruiting at The Texas Southern Career Fair, they both agreed this wouldn’t be their last.
